A federal Labor government will fast track upgrading the final section of Adelaide's north-south road corridor, opposition infrastructure spokesman Anthony Albanese says.

Visiting Adelaide on Tuesday, Mr Albanese said if elected Labor would invest $95 million in the project in the first few months in office.

"The investment would be a down payment on our commitment to the transformative South Road project," he said.

The coalition government has earmarked $2.6 billion for the project which has a total cost of more than $5 billion.

But only a small portion of that cash has been included in the government's forward estimates.

Mr Albenese said South Australia did not need more promises on the "never never".

"It needs investment in infrastructure now to create jobs and economic activity in the short term while delivering the productivity gains that will drive future economic and jobs growth," he said.
