Expert to testify in Bell murder case

An international DNA expert will give evidence in the murder trial of Dieter Pfennig who is accused of killing Adelaide schoolgirl Louise Bell.

Professor Peter Gill, a lecturer of forensic genetics at Oslo University in Norway, will testify by video link later this week.

Prosecutor Sandi McDonald told the South Australian Supreme Court on Monday that Prof Gill was regarded as the "founding father" of DNA evidence.

Ms McDonald also told the court that other DNA experts, including one from the United States, will also give evidence.

Louise was taken on the night of January 4, 1983, from the front bedroom of her parents' yellow brick house in Hackham West.

Pfennig, 67, has pleaded not guilty to murdering the girl whose body has never been found.

He was not originally a person of interest, but was charged in 2013 after a comprehensive review was conducted and DNA samples were tested in Australia and the Netherlands.

Justice Michael David is hearing the case without a jury and has asked to go on a second view.

He said he wanted to refresh himself with key locations including the house from where Louise was taken and Pfennig's former home.
