Ex-SA premier breaks a leg during bushwalk

Former South Australian premier Jay Weatherill has broken his leg while bushwalking with his family in a national park.

Mr Weatherill was hiking at Hidden Gorge in Mount Remarkable National Park on Sunday when he fell and broke his lower right leg.

It took emergency service workers more than two hours to carry the politician to a waiting ambulance.

"I want to thank them and everyone involved in my rescue and care," the ex-state Labor leader wrote on Facebook.

The former premier said he was okay but feeling embarrassed.

"I have a broken lower right leg and am feeling more than a little embarrassed for causing all this fuss," he said.

SES state duty officer Mike Baker said the rescue had been tricky due to the difficult terrain.

"It took a bit of time due to the reasonably remote location of Hidden Gorge," he said.

Mr Baker said crews initially did not know who they were rescuing but their level of care would not have changed.

"We didn't know what we were responding to apart from the fact of having an injured bushwalker in a very remote area of the Flinders," he said.

Mr Weatherill resigned from the Labor leadership after losing the last state election in March.

He remains the MP for Cheltenham in Adelaide's west and sits on the backbench.
