Electricity price cut proposed in SA

All South Australian electricity customers will get a price cut under a new deal proposed by the distribution company.

SA Power Networks also wants to establish a new social tariff to offer bigger cuts to about 12,000 vulnerable consumers.

In a submission to the Australian Energy Regulator the company says customers on the social tariff would get a $386 cut in 2015/16 while others would get a $188 reduction, provided retailers pass on the savings.

However, households with solar panels would have their discounts reduced to just $88 to reflect the higher load they place on the network relative to the power they consume.

"The good news is everyone will save money," SA Power Networks spokesman Paul Roberts said on Tuesday.

"The final outcome for each customer will depend on their individual circumstances and how retailers pass on the benefits of the reduction in network prices."

To be eligible for the new social tariff consumers need to be accepted into an energy retailer's hardship program.
