It's too soon to tell what caused a crash between a truck and a van in Adelaide which has killed the van's driver, police say.

The two vehicles collided at an intersection in Blakeview just before 11.15am on Monday, with the van driver dying at the scene.

The 34-year-old Lewiston man was the only person in the van.

The truck driver isn't injured, but has been taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital for a precautionary check up.

Police are investigating who caused the crash and have spoken with several witnesses.

They are asking people to avoid the area while northbound traffic is diverted.

The death brings the state's road toll to 54, compared to 60 at this time in 2015.
