Cop cleared on seven leak counts

A South Australian police detective says he's relieved and not surprised to have been found not guilty on seven charges related to leaking information to journalists.

Peter Dawe Martin went to trial on 10 counts of abuse of public office in relation to information about police investigations that he provided to Michelle Vella from Channel Seven and Nigel Hunt From The Advertiser in 2012.

The prosecution alleged Martin, who was a member of the major crime squad, had provided the journalists with confidential and serious details about a number of cases.

It was alleged he was flattered by the journalists' interest in him and his work and traded information for attention and friendship.

Martin pleaded not guilty to all charges and defence counsel argued that no investigations were compromised and that his actions did not amount to criminal conduct.

On Monday, a District Court jury acquitted the 57-year-old on seven of the charges but could not reach a verdict in relation to the other three.

Prosecutors said whether or not the Crown would seek to pursue those remaining charges would take some time to determine.

Judge Sydney Tilmouth ordered Martin return to court on November 24 for a possible arraignment.

Outside court, Martin said the trial "wasn't easy" but he was "not at all surprised" with the outcome.

"I don't want to discuss this at the moment. There are still matters pending as you know, so I'll leave it at that," he told reporters.

"I'm relieved, but I won't say any more at this stage,"

In a statement, Director of Public Prosecutors Adam Kimber indicated he would review the matter after receiving advice from the trial prosecutors.
