The case against a Queensland man accused of trying to kidnap a six-year-old girl at an Adelaide caravan park has been dismissed.

Ronald John Toft, 74, had been charged with aggravated attempting to detain a person to commit an offence after an incident at West Beach Caravan Park, west of the CBD, on Good Friday this year.

Police alleged Toft approached the young girl near a playground and told her there was "a clown in the camp kitchen".

The girl's mother was nearby and intervened when her daughter went to walk away.

But the charge was dismissed at the request of prosecutors in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Toft, a retired sugarcane farmer from Lucinda, north of Townsville, had been excused from the hearing, which was attended by the girl's parents.
