Residents in an Adelaide suburb have been advised to stay inside after a car crash ruptured a gas main.

The Metropolitan Fire Service issued the alert after the crash at South Road, Clovelly Park.

A witness told 9NEWS a 4WD turning on to South Road hit him, and then crashed into the gas main.

People are advised to remain indoors, close doors and windows and ensure ignition sources are extinguished.

A 200m exclusion zone is in place and fire crews have sprayed water on the gas leak.
