Birmingham says Xenophon can't win seats

Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham has dumped on the Nick Xenophon Team, saying the party led by the popular independent senator won't win any lower house seats at the July 2 election.

Labor Senator Penny Wong has hedged her bets, while Senator Xenophon says it's been a long campaign and "ask me on July 3".

Senator Birmingham says voters will cast their ballots according to who they want to govern the country - Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull or ALP leader Bill Shorten - and won't "sit on the fence" by supporting independents.

"I think the South Australian people, in the end, will make a decision between who they want to govern the country rather than prevaricate," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young isn't so sure and believes the best chances for the Xenophon group are in the northern SA seat of Grey and the Adelaide Hills seat of Mayo held by former minister Jamie Briggs.

"It's really a week and a half now for those voters to think about it," she said.

Family First Senator Bob Day, said he had "no idea" if the Xenophon group would be successful in the lower house.

Senator Wong said it was her job to get Labor members elected.

Senator Xenophon said his candidates were "decent people, good people".

"We've been working really hard to give people a choice. Let's wait and see," he said.
