Bikies lose appeals over bashing

Five Finks bikies, who viciously bashed a fellow gang member, have lost appeals against their convictions and sentences.

The five were jailed last year for between seven and 15 years over the 2013 bashing of Charles Bonnici, the former sergeant-of-arms of the now defunct gang.

On Tuesday the South Australian Court of Criminal Appeal unanimously dismissed their appeals against their convictions and sentences.

Bozidar Cekic, Mostyn Niemann, Corey Dettmann, Dean Ciantar and Paul Paunovic were all found guilty of aggravated counts of causing serious harm with intent in relation to the bashing of Mr Bonnici.

The prosecution alleged the incident took place at the Finks' north chapter clubrooms at Salisbury, in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

Mr Bonnici was found lying in a pool of blood and struggling to breathe after suffering collapsed lungs, multiple fractured ribs, a broken jaw, head injuries and lacerations.

In sentencing Chief Justice Chris Kourakis said Cekic, Dettmann and Paunovic inflicted the injuries while Niemann and Ciantar acted as lookouts.

Dettmann received the longest jail term of 15 years because of his long history of violent offending.
