Baseballers absent in SA assault case

An Australian Baseball League player accused of assaulting an opponent in an on-field brawl has failed to appear in court - but his alleged victim was also nowhere to be seen.

Former Adelaide Bite pitcher Troy Scott, 21, was due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He is charged with assaulting Melbourne Aces player Kellin Deglan during a melee at Norwood Oval in Adelaide in January.

Deglan, 23, suffered facial injuries that required dental work.

But both players are currently back home in the US, and the court heard prosecutors have not spoken with Deglan since an interview after the incident.

Prosecutor Henry Cleland said Scott had breached his bail conditions by failing to appear and said a warrant should be issued to bring him to Australia.

"Both should have showed up," he said.

"But (Scott) didn't honour his bail agreement - that's all we can go on."

However defence lawyer Craig Caldicott thought the matter should be thrown out because prosecutors had not arranged for any witnesses to appear.

"They can't prove the case," Mr Caldicott said.

"It clearly should be dismissed. It's as simple as that."

Magistrate Lynette Duncan did not appear impressed by the witness-less proceeding.

"There has never been contact between the prosecution and the victim?" she asked.

"None," Mr Cleland replied.

The planned three-day trial was abandoned and a status conference was set for November 9.

Ms Duncan implored prosecutors to make contact with Deglan by the next hearing.

"In the absence of the victim, I have given my view of the prospects of success," she said.
