Assault-accused cop criticises court delay

A serving South Australian police officer has criticised the length of time it's taken to bring assault allegations against him to court.

Sean Gregory Hobbs, 30, appeared for a second time in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday with his counsel questioning why all prosecution declarations in the case were not yet available.

The court was told the allegations against Hobbs and another policeman Andrew Allan Jaunay, 46, dated back to 2013 and had been with the Director of Public Prosecutions for two years.

The pair have both been charged with assault over an incident in Whyalla which was investigated by the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption.

Prosecutor Andrew Wilson said some declarations had been provided to the defence and any outstanding material, which included a transcript of their records of interview, was expected by the end of this week.

He also asked for the officers to be placed on a bail agreement despite the effect it would have on their ongoing work.

The court was previously told that Hobbs and Jaunay had not been suspended from duty over the alleged assault of a 17-year-old.

But Magistrate Jayanthi McGrath ruled against the request citing the age of the allegations, their occupations and that there had been no suggestion of any contact with the alleged victim.

Hobbs has been charged with one count of aggravated assault causing harm and Jaunay with one count of aggravated assault.
