Construction on Adelaide's new $135 million pool reaches major milestone

Construction on the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre has reached a major milestone, with two of the main pools being filled with water for the first time.

The South Australian government says the $135 million project is so far on time and on budget, and expected to open next Summer.

Over the past three days, three million litres of water have been pumped into the new 50-metre indoor pool and a dedicated learn-to-swim pool.

However, the construction team says the water is for the sole purpose of checking for concrete leaks – not for swimming.

The concrete for one other pool has also been laid, while work on an outdoor lagoon and indoor splash zone has begun. 

The centre will feature state-of-the-art training facilities, including a gym, fitness centre, spa, sauna and steam room.

Infrastructure Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the project is on track to finish as scheduled. 

"We are on time, we are on budget… the weather is good which means we are not being delayed because of weather," he said.

While the construction takes place, over a hundred swim groups and two thousand learn-to-swim students have temporarily relocated to alternative facilities. 

The former pools have been backfilled with soil excavated from the new ones, and the government will return more than 1000 square metres of space to Parklands.
