Adelaide councillor to stand for Greens

Adelaide City councillor Robert Simms has put up his hand to fill the casual Senate vacancy sparked by the resignation of the Greens' Penny Wright.

"I've been promoting a range of things including green innovation, disability access and social justice and this is an opportunity for me to continue to advocate for these kinds of things at a national level," Mr Simms told AAP on Thursday.

Nominees for the vacancy will be made public on Sunday and the successful candidate will be named on September 6.

Senator Wright said in July she was resigning to deal with a family illness.

At the time, acting Greens leader Scott Ludlam said all SA party members would have a say in who would be the new senator.
