Candles lit during mass may be to blame for a fire that engulfed a Greek Orthodox church in Port Adelaide, South Australia.

More than 50 firefighters battled the blaze at the Greek Orthodox Community of The Nativity of Christ on Church St, which came alight just after 2pm on Friday.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Fire Service says one-third of the building was destroyed, with the damage bill estimated to be at least $750,000.

They are still investigating the cause of the fire but believe it may be a result of candles being used in the area.
