A chemist in Adelaide's Southern Suburbs has been targeted in a smash-and-grab, with two thugs running off with a bag full of prescription drugs.

The Waradale small business owners have been left to foot the damage bill, as police still hunt for the accused.

The robbery unfolded in the early hours of this morning when two hooded and masked thieves, wielding an axe, shattered the glass door of the pharmacy, causing significant damage.

The thieves quickly made their way to the dispensary and stashed approximately 20 boxes of codeine into a large sack before fleeing into the darkness at around 4am.

Pharmacy owner Phuong Ho described the incident as "pre-planned and very quick," noting that the entire ordeal lasted only a minute.

"It is upsetting, we just have to pick ourselves up and continue I suppose," Ho said.

Police gathered evidence, including a broken axe blade, which will undergo forensic testing.
