Accused SA stalker remains behind bars

A man accused of terrorising women in Adelaide while armed with a knife has been restrained by guards while facing court for the first time.

Jie Curtis, 36, is alleged to have stalked, threatened or assaulted five women, including a 16-year-old girl, in the southeastern suburbs on Sunday and Monday.

He did not seek bail when he faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court for the first time on Friday, flanked by half a dozen police officers and security guards.

Police have confirmed Curtis was briefly hospitalised on Friday morning because of concerns about his mental health before being returned to custody.

Curtis, who has been charged with attempts to detain, aggravated assault and stealing a car, interjected during the hearing after Magistrate Bob Harrap declined a request from his lawyer to suppress his identity.

"It's a different bloke, your honour," Curtis said.

"There was a photofit in the paper that looks nothing like me."

Police prosecutors told the court there was no need for a suppression order because police had already completed their identification procedures.

Mr Harrap remanded Curtis in custody to face court again on May 10.
