DNA tests sought over SA attack

A 59-year-old man charged with a sex attack on two backpackers on a remote beach southeast of Adelaide has a case to answer even without outstanding DNA evidence, a court has heard.

The man appeared by video link from Yatala Labour Prison, wearing a grey t-shirt and glasses, in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court on Monday.

He has been charged with attempted murder, unlawful sexual intercourse without consent, unlawful detention and aggravated causing serious harm over the alleged assault at the Coorong National Park in February.

A lawyer for the Director of Public Prosecutions told the court the DPP was awaiting medical reports, toxicology and DNA test results and materials related to electronic devices allegedly found at the accused's home.

But the bulk of the evidence had been prepared and the DPP would submit that the man had a case to answer even without the DNA results, she said.

"This matter has been investigated very thoroughly," she said.

The man's lawyer, Wayne Carlin, told the court his client would no longer proceed with a bail application because the address provided was unsuitable.

But Mr Carlin flagged that a modified application would be pursued at a later date.

Magistrate Bob Harrap said he would transfer the matter to the Adelaide Magistrates Court for further declarations on June 21.
