SA woman accused of murder 'mentally ill'

A woman accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter was unable to comprehend the wrongfulness of her actions due to her mental illness, an Adelaide court has been told.

Catherine Anne Pallin, 38, is charged with murdering Ayeesha Aqua Pallin, whose body was found on a rural property in the Adelaide Hills in July.

She appeared via video link in Adelaide's magistrates court on Friday, when Magistrate Bob Harrap said he had received a 15-page psychiatric report.

The psychiatrist concluded Pallin "was unable to reason, with a moderate degree of sense and composure, about the wrongfulness of her actions".

She opined that Pallin was suffering from a mental impairment at the time of the offence, that would "render her incompetent" under the law.

Pallin was due to answer the murder charge, but her lawyer said she had yet to discuss the report with her client.

The magistrate agreed to her request that Pallin be committed to the Supreme Court without asking her to enter a plea at this stage.

She will be arraigned there on February 17.
