SA opposition leader's holiday plans spark questions

South Australian Liberal leader David Speirs has faced questions within his own party about his leadership after it was revealed he was planning to head overseas to attend a family wedding.

Speirs has since cancelled his second trip to Scotland in the past few months but 9News understands the plans provoked outrage in some sections of the party.

The leader was previously criticised after he missed state budget day to attend another family wedding.

A senior Liberal source told 9News Adelaide unrest within the party was "the worst it's ever been" and a leadership party could be brewing.

Liberal MP Josh Teague, who previously put his hand up for leadership, defended his leader but stopped short of voicing his support for Speirs' holiday.

"Those are matters entirely for him," he told reporters.

"If he's got a priority matter, that is a family commitment, then absolutely."

The opposition leader told 9News he was unavailable for an interview today but told the media he welcomed a challenge.
