Remembering the brilliant and the crazy wit of Robin Williams

Robin Williams' TV interviews were always a madcap mix of the crazy, the brilliant and the poignant.

His appearances on Australian small screens were no exception.

The beloved actor and comedian, who was found dead in his home this morning of an apparent suicide, fired off seemingly endless litanies of jokes amid observations on comedy and life during appearances on A Current Affair.

Much of it must be seen to be believed, including his brilliance in salvaging an ocean-spanning interview when he battled against faulty communication equipment to keep his interviewer in tears of laughter.

In another interview, Williams reflects on his start in comedy, saying he was never funny as a child.

It was in high school that he began to come out of his shell and first tried his hand at improvisational comedy.

"It's been fun ever since," he said.

Williams also told his own favourite joke.

"For me, the ultimate joke is a chicken and an egg lying in bed next to each other. The egg is smoking a cigarette and turns to the chicken and says 'I think we answered that question!'"
