Racing NSW boss slams greyhound body

The head of NSW horseracing says his counterparts in the greyhound industry should be ashamed of themselves in light of the live baiting scandal.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys says the greyhound governing body, GRNSW, has no excuse for letting trainers get away with the practices that have rocked the sport.

"Their excuses are pitiful," V'landys said.

"There is no excuse for not having the surveillance in place. They could have stopped it.

"To allow this sort of cruelty to occur - there are absolutely no excuses. They just didn't have the will.

"They should be ashamed of themselves."

Thirty trainers across Queensland, NSW and Victoria have been suspended and nominations for the their dogs refused since vision of dogs being trained using live rabbits, possums and baby pigs was aired on the ABC earlier this week.

Greyhound racing in NSW receives its income from TAB turnover under the Racing Distribution Act. Thoroughbred racing receives 70 per cent, harness racing 17 per cent and greyhound racing 13 per cent.

In a submission to a 2013 state government inquiry into greyhound racing, the industry said the economic contribution of wagering on greyhounds in the 2010 financial year was $31 million while the industry contributed $51 million in flow-on benefits.
