'Please use caution': Brisbane motorists at risk as power outage wipes out traffic lights

Brisbane commuters are being urged to take caution during peak hour as a huge power outage in south-east Queensland takes down multiple traffic lights.

Transport and Main Roads Queensland has warned motorists to "take care on the roads this afternoon", and to use caution at intersections until power is restored.

"It appears that there are multiple power outages in the Brisbane metro area, please use caution at intersections until power is restored," Queensland Traffic Metro tweeted.

Power provider Energex reported a widespread outage from the Gold Coast to Caboolture was affecting more than 375,000 customers.

At approximately 3.20pm AEST Energex reported that around 250,000 Queensland residents had their power restored.

The outage was the result of a generator at a power station failing.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services confirmed that they have been called to a generator turbine fire at the Callide Power Station at Biloela, about 280km north-west of Bundaberg, this afternoon.

Three crews are on scene trying to contain the blaze, with three more crews reportedly en route to assist.

A 550m exclusion zone has been set up around the area, with an evacuation effort reportedly underway.

There are reports the fire was started by an explosion at the plant.
