Hundreds of police recruits will get $20,000 knocked off their HECS debt in Queensland.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said in a release earlier today that there had been a 200 per cent increase in applicants since a major recruitment drive kicked off last year.

That translates to more than 2000 applicants in the pipeline, with a record number of trainees already in Queensland Police academies.

And 400 successful applicants with degrees in areas such as criminology, social work, counselling, or other relevant human services will get up to $20,000 paid off their HECS debt.

"These incentives to attract new recruits are providing significant support to the Queensland Police Service's recruiting efforts," Ryan said.

"There are 20,000 reasons for university graduates with specified degrees to consider a career with the Queensland Police Service.

"We are putting the call out to everyone who has a relevant degree to consider a challenging and rewarding career with Queensland Police."
