Queensland declares Perth a hotspot just hours before it was set to reopen to much of Australia

Queensland has declared large parts of Western Australia a COVID-19 hotspot just hours before the Sunshine State was set to reopen its borders to much of Australia.

Queensland became the first state to declare large parts of WA a coronavirus hotspot today.

Queensland Health said in a statement that anyone who has been in Metropolitan Perth, Peel or the South West regions of WA who arrives in Queensland from 6pm tonight will face 14 days hotel quarantine.

However, with Greater Sydney's COVID-19 outbreak contained, and the borders reopening at 1am tomorrow, tourism operators are still hopeful of a bumper start to the year.

"Sydneysiders have come and wanted to book in for Easter, so yeah we're filling up which is really exciting," Crystal Pacific's Sarah Caruana told 9News.

It's the perfect rebound for accommodation industry, although tour operators will have to wait longer for their silver lining.

"It will probably take a few weeks for them to kind of gain that trust again, because it has closed and then opened up again," Go Ballooning's Mariella Zaffe said.

Tourists from Sydney are projected to inject up to $352 million into the state's economy over the Easter break. Another $380 million from Victoria.

It's a cash-injection that could quickly disappear if there is another outbreak and the borders go back up.

"I'm not going to be able to give declarations that give absolute certainty about borders," Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said.

As for Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, he says the key for Australia's tourism sector is "consistency and clarity around border closures".
