Queensland premier won't hesitate to close newly-reopened border if coronavirus cases start to rise

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she won't hesitate in shutting the border to newly reopened states if coronavirus case numbers start to rise again.

The border with NSW will come down on December 1, finally allowing residents in Greater Sydney to travel north after it was declared a COVID-19 hotspot.

Queensland will reopen its border to Victoria after the state recorded another day of no new cases.

But the reopening could be reversed, the premier warned.

"We still have to remember, it can happen at any time," Ms Palaszczuk told Today.

"We have seen what happened in Adelaide…what we have seen with Adelaide is that when you do have an outbreak, you can declare a hot spot area.

"We've got people coming back from overseas going into hotel quarantine and it only takes one person to get out or to go into the community and we could be back into a semi-kind of lockdown."

She acknowledged Queensland's lengthy border closure with its southern states had been "awful".

"I know the toll it has taken on families and very distressing, I understand that.

"(But) you have to put the needs of your State first. I'm the Premier for Queensland."

But, now was the time for reunions and a much-needed boost to the state's hard-hit tourism industry.

"There is some light at the end of the tunnel," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Christmas is a great time to be reunited.

"It is great for business. It's great for Queensland."
