A Queensland man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked his ex-partner with a machete in Brisbane's western outskirts.

Neighbours were forced to intervene after the 51-year-old man allegedly rammed the woman's car with his own in Monterey Street, Wacol, about 7.45am on Thursday before chasing her down the street with the weapon, twice managing to strike her with it.

The 44-year-old victim is recovering in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital with lacerations to her head and neck, while the 51-year-old man will appear in the Richlands Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was charged with one count each of attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, going armed so as to cause fear and common assault.

It's understood the woman had just dropped her children off at a local train station when she was attacked.

One man tried to fight the alleged attacker off by hurling a wheelie bin at him, while another used a chair leg.

Another woman ran to help the victim get away.

"My wife, she's the one - while others were standing around, she went and rescued the lady," Brian Farley told the Seven Network.

"It's terrible."

Police have said the two were known to one another and the man was reportedly the victim's ex-partner.

The woman's 18-year-old son has expressed gratitude to those who rescued her.
