A 12-metre humpback whale entangled in netting in Moreton Bay has been freed and is swimming back into deeper waters.

The whale became caught in netting off Shorncliffe, north of Brisbane, with Marine Park rangers called around 7am on Tuesday.

Rangers cut the net and the whale was able to free itself around 8.30am.

"The net certainly did encumber the whale, there were a few marks around the tail where the net was attached," Steve Hoseck from Marine Parks told ABC.

The bay was very shallow where the whale had become stranded, he said.
