A man has died and his step-son has been injured after a retaining wall collapsed on a job site in Brisbane's West End this morning.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed two patients suffered significant injuries when a retaining wall collapsed on Boundary Street in the inner-southern suburb just before 8.30am.

Kimura Dixon, 45, was in a life-threatening condition when paramedics arrived and died at the scene.

A 19-year-old man, understood to be his step-son, was also injured, and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a stable condition after a "prolonged extrication" that took more than an hour.

The younger man had been working in a shallow trench about one metre away from the wall on the site's boundary and became trapped from the waist down when it collapsed.

He was assisted by six other workers on the scene who helped move rubble before paramedics and fire crews arrived.

"(The) 19-year-old male had a large amount of concrete on his chest which was restricting his breathing," Inspector Chris Pemberton

"Those workers and the four attending police removed that concrete prior to the arrival of anyone else, which would have saved his life."

Workplace Health and Safety will investigate with assistance from police, who will prepare a report for the coroner.

Boundary Street is currently closed between Melbourne Street and Edmondstone Street and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
