Uni cops a beating in Brisbane storm

The University of Queensland has copped a battering in one of the worst storms to hit Brisbane in decades.

Buildings across the university's St Lucia and Herston campuses, including lecture halls and libraries, suffered significant flooding and major damage to windows during Thursday's fierce weather.

UQ's property director, Alan Egan, says windows on heritage sandstone buildings that surround the Great Court at the St Lucia campus suffered substantial damage from the very large hail stones the storm produced.

The university's Schonell Theatre was evacuated when water began pouring down stairwells and through light fittings in the ceiling.

Mr Egan said the heritage-listed Mayne Medical School, located at the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital in Herston, was also badly affected.

"That sustained a lot of broken glass and it's looking like a Swiss cheese," he told AAP.

He said it was lucky that few of the university's 45,000 students were on campus on Thursday, after exams ended last weekend.

"We didn't have to contend with their safety, we really just had to worry about the condition of the buildings," Mr Egan said.

Mr Egan said he expected all repairs would be completed before graduation ceremonies begin on December 11.
