Hikers rescued after night stranded atop Sunshine Coast mountain

Two inexperienced hikers have been winched to safety following a night spent stranded on a cliff on the Sunshine Coast, after one of them injured his leg.

The men phoned for help about 6pm yesterday, after one of them fell and suffered a serious cut to his leg at a difficult part of the climb up Mount Beerwah, located in the Glass House Mountains.

They were forced to camp on the mountain after rescuers were unable to reach them last night.

Emergency services laboured for hours, hindered by thick cloud cover, before a helicopter crew was finally able to rescue the pair today. 

The hikers were then ushered to a waiting ambulance and taken to Caloundra Hospital for treatment.

Both are being treated for hypothermia, with one expected to receive stitches for the injury sustained in the course of the climb.

Mount Beerwah is a popular spot for hikers as it is the highest peak in the Glass House Mountains, with a height of 556m.
