Two dead in horror 48-hours for Queensland’s roads

Two people have died in two separate head-on crashes in Queensland’s southeast this weekend.

A Sunshine Coast couple were travelling in their Hyundai north on the Gateway Motorway, Rochedale, about 4.20am today when a ute hurtled straight towards them.

The 61-year-old man in the passenger seat of the Hyundai took most of the impact, and later died in hospital.

His partner sustained minor injuries, while the ute driver accused of causing the crash was discharged from hospital.

It remains unclear how the 29-year-old ended up in the northbound lane, but police believe he had been travelling in the wrong direction for some time.

Today’s fatal crash followed similar scenes on the M1 yesterday, where Chinese national Tiffany Yu died from catastrophic injuries.

The other driver was also in the wrong lane; police sources have told 9NEWS he may have been drinking or using drugs.

Both men allegedly responsible for the two crashes will be interviewed by police, with charges expected to be laid.
