Qld finger lopper to face trial

Moments after allegedly lopping off a man's finger with a hammer and chisel, his accused torturer then drove the victim to hospital, a Queensland court has heard.

Kyrin Power, 27, is facing several charges including torture, deprivation of liberty and acts intended to cause harm after an alleged kidnapping on the Gold Coast in February last year.

James Edward King on Friday told Southport Magistrates Court that Power and co-accused Luke Studeman bashed him with baseball bats in a remote area of Currumbin.

Mr King then claims Power placed his hand on a post and used the hammer and chisel to chop off his finger in an apparent dispute over money.

When asked how he had got from the scene to hospital, Mr King explained it had been his alleged attackers who drove him to help.

Power's barrister Patrick Wilson cross-examined Mr King, querying an initial claim his finger had been severed in a "brush-cutter accident".

Mr King, who initially refused to make a complaint to police, said he'd fabricated that story to hospital staff upon his arrival.

"They called the coppers because they didn't believe me," Mr King said.

Power successfully applied for bail on Friday after 11 months in custody.

Mr Wilson said the experience of jail had been life-changing for his client.

"It's been a rude shock to him in terms of the experience," Mr Wilson told the court.

Studeman, 30, was granted bail last year.

As part of his strict bail conditions, Power cannot make contact with Mr King's grandmother after allegedly forcing his way into her home in a previous attempt to locate Mr King.

Power will stand trial in Southport Magistrates Court on a date to be confirmed.
