Police are investigating the cause of a fatal car crash that claimed the life of a three-year-old child on Wednesday evening.

A Mitsubishi ASX was travelling along Lowmead Road in the rural town of Rosedale, some 400km north of Brisbane, about 7.30pm, Queensland Police said.

Initial investigations by the forensic crash unit indicated the SUV veered off the road and crashed, police said.
