WHAT'S GOING ON WITH QUEENSLAND'S CORRUPTION WATCHDOG:

THE CCC

The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) investigates organised crime, pedophilia, terrorism, serious crime and corruption in Queensland.

THE PCCC

The Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee (PCCC) is a group of government and opposition MPs that oversees the CCC and appoints its officers. All appointments require bipartisan approval.

WHAT'S THE ISSUE

Alan MacSporran has been appointed as the first permanent CCC chair since April 2012 after years of stalemate because both major parties tried to stop each other from appointing their choice.

HOW THE DEADLOCK WAS BROKEN

The Liberal National Party (LNP) refused to consider Mr MacSporran as CCC chair unless former deputy premier Jeff Seeney became chair of the PCCC.

Labor wouldn't accept Mr Seeney in that role, so the LNP would not approve Mr MacSporran as CCC chair.

Crossbench MP Rob Katter broke the deadlock by secretly subbing onto the PCCC in place of a Labor MP and giving bipartisan approval for Mr MacSporran.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Mr MacSporran has been appointed to lead the CCC for the next five years, but the PCCC remains deadlocked over who their chair will be.

Governments will only need the tick of another party, rather than the opposition, to appoint a CCC boss in the future.
