The new energy deal helping Queenslanders avoid bill shock

The best power price today could catch you out tomorrow, according to consumer analysts Canstar Blue.

Experts told 9NEWS a fixed rate is the only way to avoid that risk. It’s something the big electricity providers had stopped offering Queenslanders, until now.

“The retailers can sneak through price increases and you may not even realise,”  Simon Downes from Canstar Blue said.

Energy Australia's new Secure Saver plan offers a guaranteed price for two years.

“Energy prices have been rising, we wanted to make sure we give back to customers,” Kim Clarke from Energy Australia said.

If you sign up now, you’ll get 20 percent off your usage charges as well as an unprecedented offer.

“If the prices go down during the time, actually the rates go down as well,” Ms Clarke said.

“It's a compelling offer, particularly if you're the type of person who likes to set and forget your energy plan,” Mr Downes said.

That's not retiree Mark Warnock, who compares prices annually.

“Because if you can save 10 or 15 percent, it's essentially $100 or $200 dollars a year you won't be paying," Mr Warnock said.

He found it cheaper in the long run, to lock in a fixed rate.

Either way, if you want the cheapest price, it's best to be constantly comparing.

“You have to get into the habit of checking your bills regularly, compare this month's bill to last month's bill,” Mr Downes said.

“If you have a fixed rate product on the market now and it's already competitive now, in two years time you should be well ahead of the game.”
