Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely to hit Brisbane as severe thunderstorms roll across southeast Queensland.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for people in parts of Redland City, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Council Areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology has urged residents to move their cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and seek shelter.

The thunderstorms have also threatened to delay flights in Brisbane with passengers urged to check airlines for possible changes to travel plans.

More than 2300 Gold Coast homes and businesses were without power at 3pm on Saturday.

A low pressure trough crossing the bottom of the state is behind the predicted stormy weather, and heavy rain is expected well into Saturday evening but conditions are set to clear by Sunday.
