Fire guts Qld prison building

A fire has gutted a building used to house recently released prisoners near a jail in Brisbane's southwest.

The two-storey property on Wacol Station Road, near the Brisbane Correctional Centre at Wacol, went up in flames about 1pm on Friday.

Seven fire crews were used to extinguish the flames by 2.15pm, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus searched both levels and fire investigators were called in to help determine the cause of the blaze.

The building was substantially damaged, a Queensland Corrective Services spokeswoman said in a statement.

"There were no injuries and all residents in the complex have been accounted for," she said.

"Two residents of the house will be accommodated elsewhere on the complex."

Police and ambulance officers were also called to the scene.

The house is used as contingency accommodation for newly released inmates, including those in the dangerous prisoners sexual offenders category.
