Wild winds tipped for Qld's southeast

Boaties in Queensland's southeast are being warned of wild winds from late on Wednesday.

Gale force winds are expected to affect the coastline from the Gold Coast north to Fraser Island, and will be in full force by Thursday.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Adam Blazak says anyone out on the water should take care, and surfers should also be aware of the dangerous conditions.

"The seas are going to get up to or in excess of four metres so it's going to be quite hectic, certainly for recreational boating," he told AAP.

"They'll probably persist in to Friday as well, creating quite dangerous surf conditions."

Early forecasts suggest winds may be in excess of 70 kilometres per hour, however the expected speed will be updated later on Tuesday.

While the gale force winds are expected to be strongest out off the coast, Mr Blazak said some inland areas would be affected such as Springbrook and Mt Tamborine in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

"Anywhere along higher ground or the ridge tops, certainly around the southern border ranges, will feel an increase in wind on Thursday."

There will also be accompanying rainfall but that will mostly soak northern NSW residents.

"At this stage it's a northern NSW rainfall event, however we will get a few showers and a bit of a rain between five and up to 10 millimetres at best."

As a precaution, Fisheries Queensland will remove more than 20 shark nets along the Gold and Sunshine Coast beaches on Tuesday as they could come adrift.
