Skeleton unearthed in Queensland town

Police have appealed for information after the discovery of what’s believed to be a teaching skeleton in northern Queensland.

Officers in the Tablelands town of Herberton, south-west of Cairns, were alerted on June 5 that bones had been found during excavation works on John Street.

Investigations so far suggest the remains are believed to be from a teaching skeleton.

Teaching skeletons are anatomical models of human bones used in academic settings, including for medical students.

While most modern teaching skeletons are constructed artificially, historically, many were actual human remains.

Police are now appealing for anybody who knows of any residents who lived on John Street before the 1980s, or who has information about the historical use of teaching skeletons in Herberton, to come forward.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery of the bones.
