Several sharks seen circling bait balls in waters off Burleigh Heads

Video of sharks swimming off one of the Gold Coast's most popular beaches has emerged, just over a week after the fatal attack at Coolangatta.

It comes as school holidays are about to kick off and volunteer Surf Life Savers across the State prepare to launch their patrol season.

Max Hinton, director of Content Lion, captured drone vision of about 10 sharks circling one of the many bait fish balls dotted along the Queensland coast line.

The video was recorded yesterday morning off Burleigh Heads.

"This was about 500 meters off-shore and completely took me by surprise how close it was and the scale of how many sharks there were," Mr Hinton said

"There are sharks out there, we saw a 5-metre great white off Burleigh just last evening," Michael Hart, state member for Burleigh, said today.

Last week's fatal shark attack at Greenmount Beach has put many locals on edge but they are still in the water.

Another surfer out on the water today told 9News, "I overheard someone this morning that saw a bull shark floating around this morning".

It comes as school holidays are about to kick off around the state and the start of the volunteer surf lifesaving patrol season.

Thousands of people are expected to pack gold coast beaches this weekend, surf life savers will have a number of shark monitoring processes in place.

Beach goers are also being reminded to always swim between the flags and to steer clear of any bait fish in the water which are known to attract sharks.

"Six roving jet skis rove from Southport down to the border, our Westpac rescue drones will be in the sky our Westpac rescue helicopter," Surf Lifesaving Queensland's Nathan Fife said.

"(But) if (swimmers) do see any bait balls please stay well away."
