Ravenshoe blast driver wakes from coma

The driver of the ute that sparked the powerful explosion that tore through a far north Queensland cafe has woken from an induced coma.

Brian Scutt, 60, broke his back when he suffered a medical condition and crashed into a gas bottle behind the Serves You Right Cafe at Ravenshoe on June 9, killing two people and seriously injuring 18 more.

Mr Scutt's son, Jimmy Scutt, told Fairfax Media his father, who is in the Cairns Base Hospital, is awake but has not yet been told about the crash.

The explosion put 20 people in the hospital in one of the state's worst burns crises.

Two of the victims, Nicole Nyholt and Margaret Clarke, have since died, plunging the tight-knight Ravenshoe community into mourning.

After the initial explosion, locals were seen on security vision disregarding their own safety to run straight into the still-burning cafe to search for more victims, as well as helping those injured out on the street.
