High-tech cameras that will catch Queensland drivers using their mobile phones behind the wheel may be transportable, rather than fixed.

The government insists the technology, which captures clear and accurate photos in all weather conditions, will be introduced in Queensland soon - although it has not committed to a time frame for the roll-out.

An "astounding" number of law-breakers, more than 100,000 in just three months, have been caught by the cameras in NSW, according to Bernard Carlon from the NSW Road Safety Centre.

"The clarity of the picture, the transportable nature, this can go anywhere on any road at any time and the fact that it's so thoroughly done, it will stand up in any court," Queensland roads minister Mark Bailey said in Sydney today where he was briefed by experts.

"I want to see this technology in Queensland as soon as possible."

Mr Bailey said he wants the cameras to be mobile and come with hefty penalties for those caught, including a $1000 fine for the first offence, and loss of license for those caught a second time.
