A mother has credited her son's quick thinking for saving her after a tree crushed her car in Queensland during the Christmas Day storms.

Michelle Allport from Helensvale was driving home with her family at night when a huge branch crashed down on them, leaving a wreckage of metal and shattered glass.

She received the brunt of the impact, which shattered her shoulder and left her in intensive care and undergoing two surgeries.

"We would never have hopped in the car had we thought we were racing against something," she said.

"Very scary but I'm glad it was me and not Eloise, who was sitting behind me, or these guys."

"I went straight into our suspected spinal [injury response], basically holding mum's neck, making sure she's still, making sure she's not being moved," he said.
