A man allegedly tried to separate a child from his mother in a Brisbane shopping centre, police allege.

The man allegedly approached the four-year-old from behind and guided him away from his mother while they were walking through the shopping centre on Inala Avenue in Inala about 9.35am on June 9.

The boy's mother intervened and the boy returned to her, causing the man to leave the area, police said in a statement.
