North Qld heavy rain alert cancelled

Parts of north Queensland remain on flood watch, however widespread heavy rain is no longer expected to hit the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned earlier on Tuesday more than 250mm of rain could be dumped on some areas on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

That warning has since been cancelled but the bureau says a monsoonal low over the Northern Territory could cause abnormally high tides along western Cape York.

There could also be some localised heavy rain and thunderstorms along the tropical coast.

A flood watch remains for catchments between Babinda and Ingham and the Gulf Country.

A minor flood warning remains for the Barcoo River and a moderate flood alert is in place for the Flinders and Nicholson Rivers.

Some areas have already been saturated, with between 50mm and 160mm of rain falling between Townsville and Rollingstone in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning.
