Qld temperatures set to soar

Late summer heat is set to scorch Queensland, with temperatures up to 6C above average expected in Brisbane.

The Bureau of Meteorology is tipping a maximum of 36C for Brisbane on Tuesday, 6C above the February norm, while inland parts of the state will soar to more than 40C.

"It will be hotter across much of the state, the interior in particular ... we're looking at anywhere between 2-8C above average," BoM forecaster Michelle Berry told AAP.

Julia Creek, west on Mount Isa, is forecast to reach 44C on Tuesday.

Areas in the southeast including Gatton and Goondiwindi are predicted to nudge 40C, while Ipswich is on track to hit 38C.

"There is a stagnant air mass of hot air circulating above the state," Ms Berry said.

However, the spike in heat is only expected to be temporary in the southeast with a cooler change set to pass over on Tuesday evening.

Temperatures will then drop to around 30C later in the week.

However, inland and northern areas of Queensland can expect to be hotter for a bit longer.

"The northern parts of the state will stay hot through Wednesday and Thursday," Ms Berry said.
