Qld teens take risks with drunk drivers

More than half of Queensland's senior school students say they've travelled with a driver they believed had been drinking, according to a worrying RACQ survey.

RACQ community and education manager David Contarini said the findings in a survey of year 11 and 12 high school students was a wake-up call to parents.

"This is scary stuff for parents of teenagers. It's very worrying to see teenagers placing themselves at risk like this," he said.

"We're asking parents to make sure they've spoken with their kids about their strategy for getting home safely."

Mr Contarini encouraged parents to have a "no-questions-asked" phone call policy with their teenager.

He said it was the best way to avoid any unnecessary danger.

"We know that any parent would rather take a phone call in the middle of the night than receive a knock on the door from emergency services."

The RACQ survey also found 61 per cent of senior students were getting into cars when they didn't know the driver.
