Mixed jobs data for Qld in July

Queensland treasurer Curtis Pitt is confident about jobs growth in the state despite official figures showing the unemployment rate rose to 6.5 per cent in July.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased from 6.1 per cent to 6.5 per cent, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data released on Thursday.

But trend employment figures - the type the government prefers to use - showed a 0.1 per cent drop to 6.3 per cent.

"The unemployment figures that have been released today show again that we are still at 6.3 per cent," he said in Brisbane.

"We have seen jobs growth of 3600 over July.

"Many of those jobs are part-time but (it's) a stark contrast to the six jobs a day on average that were disappearing under the former government."

But opposition leader Lawrence Springborg said the government was not preparing adequately to grow the state's economy in the long term.

"The real concern the LNP has here is that this is a government that doesn't have a plan for jobs and doesn't have a plan for infrastructure," he said.

The national jobless rate also jumped last month, increasing from 6 per cent to 6.3 per cent, which was greater than market expectations.
