Brisbane City Council backs gay marriage

Brisbane City Council has backed the legalisation of same-sex marriage but won't write to the prime minister to demand change.
The Liberal National Party-dominated council on Tuesday backed a motion stating that it supports the legalisation of marriage between consenting adults, regardless of sex, sexuality or gender identity.

But LNP councillors voted down the second part of the motion, which proposed calling on the federal government to pass laws to legalise gay marriage as soon as possible, and to write to Malcolm Turnbull to that effect.
